In 2011 significant changes in music provision within Dorset education meant the
discontinuation of the music centre in Bridport. This had provided children and adults the opportunity to play music in a wind band, string group or orchestra.

The voluntary committee that supported the groups decided that they would endeavour to continue to support music making in Bridport. The first rehearsals were held early in 2012 with Walter Brewster as Music Director.

West Dorset Community Orchestra still encourages musicians of all ages to develop their skills. There is no an audition or an expectation of a specific grade. New members should have gained a competence with their instrument and used to reading music and are invited to attend for free rehearsals for the first half term.

A variety of orchestral music is rehearsed and performed, ranging from music from films to some well known classics or some that are less often heard.

Jonathan Jevons took over from Walter in January 2024.
